Key facts

Spider-hunting wasps nest in the ground and provision the nest with a single paralysed spider

Most of the 40+ species have a slender black or black-and-red abdomen and long black legs

They are active insects, running about looking for prey or taking short flights

Recognition

This species is unusual, with red tibiae ('thighs'), white spots on the abdomen and white marks by the eyes
