Key facts

The familiar house spider, with long legs and a chevron pattern on the abdomen

Common and widespread across most of Britain, except for parts of Wales and Scotland

This is the commonest of a number of similar tegenaria species

Recognition

Hairy brown with darker markings on the abdomen; legs up to twice as long as its 10–16mm body

Spins a funnel web - a tube in which it sits waiting for prey, spreading out into a sheet
