Key facts

A tall and broad canopy tree with grey bark and fans of bright green oval leaves, although variants with purple leaves occur

Tassel-like catkins on long stalks, followed by triangular beech nuts (known as mast) in prickly seed cases

Its natural range is the south and west of England, especially on free-draining soils, but widely planted elsewhere
