Small stocky seaduck with long extended tail feathers

Habitat: sea, estuaries occasionally inland

Breeds in Iceland and Scandinavia, visiting mostly northern Britain in winter

Male black and white with long tail feathers; female dark brown with dark face patch and short stumpy tail

Swims and dives often for long periods of time; fast flight

Eats crustaceans and molluscs

Nest is a lined hollow hidden in vegetation

1 Brood May – July ; 5-9 yellow eggs
