Key facts
A plant once common in damp meadows but now largely restricted to nature reserves
Leaves are oblong and slightly toothed, all but the topmost with stalks
Loose spikes of reddish-purple (and occasionally pink) flowers in summer, growing 30 cm or more high
Extras
Leaves were used to relieve head colds and headaches and to heal wounds
