The western part of Rainham Marshes has been smartened up by Havering Council and declared a Local Nature Reserve. Scrapes have been created and the Rainham-to-Purfleet path runs all the way through from north to south, with seats at regular intervals. It has good birdlife and an unusually high density of water voles. The vegetation has coarsened in recent years but is improving as grazing is resumed.
