Compare this Forestry Commission wood with Shadwell Wood just a short distance away. This wood has been planted up with conifers, a fate that Shadwell Wood has escaped. Both woods are in an area with many deer, although in Shadwell they are fenced out of the wood. Both have oxlips, although in this wood they are eaten by deer. The small ponds just inside the wood have frogs breeding.

Visiting

On the main road from Saffron Walden, about one mile before the village of Ashdon. Entrance to Shadwell Wood by a track at the side of 'Barleycroft' bungalow and to Lt Hales Wood on the other side of the road. Track to Shadwell Wood is difficult in wet weather. Please do not block either track.

Accessible at all times.

Spring through to early summer for wild flowers and early migrant birds.
