Once this fragment of woodland in Chigwell Row was part of the Royal Forest of Essex, like Hainault Forest on the other side of Romford Road. It contains hundreds of veteran hornbeam pollards plus a number of ancient oaks. Like all ancient woodlands it is important for insects, and particularly those that depend on dead wood.
