As it approaches Colchester from the west the River Colne meanders across a broad flood plain, forming a green space that runs almost to the centre of the town. At its heart is Cymbeline Meadows, former farmland that Colchester Council is managing much like the ancient flood meadows that used to occupy this land. Close by are other open spaces the Council manages for wildlife – Hilly Fields and Buntings Meadow.
