Just south of Basildon lies a crescent-shaped hilly ridge more than 100m high, extending from the former plotland township of Dunton in the west to Vange in the east and giving tremendous views over the Thames estuary and into east London. Its name, Langdon, means 'long hill' and much of its land is set aside for wildlife and for recreation, with Essex Wildlife Trust's Langdon nature reserve to the north and west, partnered by Langdon Hills country park, managed by Thurrock Council's Ranger Service, to the south and east.
